About AUT (Auckland University of Technology)

The Australian University of Technology was a diverse and collaborative community located in NewZealand. In 1895 Auckland technical school was established in Rutland street for night classes with a strength 137 students for vocational education and trades. George George presided as 1st president of the Auckland Technical School. Later in 1905, there was a good growth in the literacy rate in Auckland Technical School and in the thought of expanding the school they purchased some land in the East Wellesley street. In 1906, they opened Auckland Technical College. In 1913, educational minister James Allen opened institution, Seddon Memorial Technical College in the name of the former education minister Richard Seddon. In 1922 George Goerge took his retirement and George Park took charge as director of Auckland Technical School. At his time 1683 students were enrolled in the Auckland Technical School. In 1939 Seddon Memorial Technical College became the largest universities in the NewZealand where 4,200+ students persuaded their education with Permanent Staff of 59 and part-time staff of 90+ presided over the college. In 1946 George Park took his retirement and Horace Scoot took charge as principal of the Seddon Memorial Technical College. In the same year, Seddon Memorial Technical University implemented the new business course.

In 1953 Seddon Memorial Technical College started Colombo plan which provided training for the abroad students. Seddon Memorial Technical College hired trainee teachers from various countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Borneo. In 1957 Seddon Memorial Technical College, science department students with help of transmitter made a television broadcast under the guidance of the Ron Waddell. Television came into existence just before three years the students of Seddon Memorial Technical College, started their television broadcasting using the transmitter. In 1957 students and staff examined the new internal combustion engine with new features provided by the Garage Proprietors’ Association. In 1959, carpentry programme called Sandwich was introduced by the Department of Maori Affairs for the Maori Youth. In 1960, Horace Scoot took his retirement and College separates in two parts Technical Institute and Technical High School. Roderick Keir took charge as head of the technical institute and Sidney Lee took charge as head of the Technical High School.

The Department Of Education termed it as “major turning point in the history of New Zealand’s technical education system”. In 1963 according to Education Amendment Act 1963, the technical institution is renamed as Auckland Technical Institute. In 1964 Auckland technical Institute started in NewZealand certificate in Engineering. In 1969 Cyril Maloy is appointed as the principal of the Technical Institute. In 1970 Auckland Technical Institute started 1st satellite institute at the Qtara named Manaku Technical Institute. Later in 1972, Ivan Moses is appointed as principal of the institute. In 2000 Auckland Technical Institute renamed itself as Auckland University of the Technology.
